Can a training course help a man become a better father? | Take ...

That old cliche that a baby doesn?t arrive with an instruction manual might not be as true now as before. There's a flourishing industry of parenting books, DVDs and online resources. But how often do new fathers do the reading and research?

In an attempt to engage men, fatherhood training classes are popping up across the Southland.

At one of these ?Parent Cafe? trainings in Highland Park, men gather in a small conference room. The class is not so much about basics, like diaper changing or sleep techniques. Ray Estrella Jr., who initiated the 12-week training course at the American Indian Family Partnership where he works, says it?s about active paternal engagement.

?Most of our dads are new dads. They have no idea of what being a father is,? Estrella says. The course emphasizes concepts like ?being responsible, being caring, being trusting.? ?

Estrella points out that the training is a place for men to meet and share their struggles, joys, and fatherhood questions with other dads. It's also the place where experts offer tips and best practices. Francisco Oaxaca, director of public affairs at the child advocacy non-profit First Five LA, is a big supporter of these fatherhood trainings ?(his organization funds many of them).

?We know that anyone who has children is doing the best job that they can," he says, "and we?re hoping that these programs are making it safe to say, 'you know what, ?I would like to learn more and do more and be more as a parent.'?

The role a father plays in a child?s early years is crucial, says Oaxaca, who bases his argument on mounting academic research. ?Studies have shown how important the role of fathers is in terms of helping male children learn how to control their emotions and act in social situations, and helping female children have better self esteem, and better control of their emotions as well.??

Oaxaca also points out that, given the incredible ethnic and racial variety of Southern California, the trainings have to be culturally sensitive to the fathers' backgrounds. Ray Estrella Sr., a ?trainer at the American Indian Family Partnership, refers to his own family history to illustrate the point.

As a Pascua Yaqui Indian, Estrella grew up ?in a large family in Arizona. He lost contact with grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins when his parents moved to California for better opportunities. Estrella sees this pattern among many immigrants whose experiences include losing their family network.

??The need," he says, "is to try and hold the familes together, to teach them to become better families based on old traditional values. Values that we learned from our ancestors about the importance of family, the importance of honor, the importance of taking caring of your family.??

Francisco Oaxaca of First Five LA insists that most families could use some support because of what he describes as ?today?s reality? of child-rearing - in which fathers are not the sole breadwinners. ?Today we see dual-income families, we see even more and more cases where the female parent is the primary breadwinner and the male parent is staying at home taking on that role.? ?

Arnold Carle, who tells his story in the radio feature, believes the training he received at the American Indian Family Partnership helped him understand how to be a better and more engaged father because it helped him ??see things in a different way. I?m more understanding about the way a family should be.? That seemingly small realization has helped Carle become a more active and engaged presence in his 18-month-old son?s life.

Pakistan marks "Malala Day", poor children to get cash for school

ISLAMABAD (Reuters) - The families of more than 3 million poor children in Pakistan will receive cash stipends if their children go to school, the government said as officials prepared to mark "Malala Day" on Saturday in support of a schoolgirl shot by the Taliban.

U.N. officials declared Malala Day one month after 15-year-old Malala Yousufzai and two of her classmates were shot by the Pakistan Taliban. She had been targeted for speaking out against the insurgency.

In the days following the shooting, Yousufzai became an international icon and world leaders pledged to support her campaign for girls' education. She is now recovering in a British hospital.

On Friday, Pakistani president Asif Zardari added his signature to petitions signed by more than a million people urging Pakistan to pay stipends to families who put their girls in school in honor of Malala.

"Malala's dreams represent what is best about Pakistan," said former British Prime Minister Gordon Brown as he presented the petitions to President Zardari.

Tens of thousands of Britons have called on the government to nominate Malala Yousufzai for a Nobel Peace Prize for her work promoting girls' education.

On Friday, the government announced that poor families will now receive $2 a month per child in primary school.

The program will be funded by the World Bank and Britain and distributed through the government's Benazir Income Support Program, designed to give small cash payments to needy families. The families in the program already receive $10 a month for basic expenditure.

After a stipend program was put in place in Pakistan's Punjab province, a World Bank study found a nine percent increase in girls' enrolment over two years, said Alaphia Zoyab, the South Asia campaigner for internet activist group Avaaz.

Pakistan is struggling to overcome widespread poverty, a Taliban insurgency and massive, endemic corruption. Less than 0.57 percent of Pakistan's 180 million citizens pay income tax, money that the government could use to educate poor children.

Instead, the Pakistani government relies on foreign donors to fund many social programs. Britain is due to spend around $1 billion on helping Pakistan educate poor children by 2015.

iPhone 5 vs. Nexus 4: Which one should you get?

iPhone 5 vs. Nexus 4: Which one should you get?

Apple has released the taller, thinner, faster, lighter, brighter iPhone 5 and now Google has struck back with the LG Nexus 4. So what's a gadget geek to do? Apple owns the patent (we think maybe literally...) on elegant, futuristic hardware, consumer-friendly software, and the top content service in the world. Google and LG have brought almost every spec you can imagine (and a few you couldn't!), have the most powerful, customizable software, and the best internet services on the planet. How can you possibly decide between them?

Let's take a look...!

Google/LG Nexus 4

Google/LG Nexus 4

LG starts the Nexus 4 off with a massive 4.7-inch IPS display at 768x1280. That's essentially 720p with its belt let out. The sides are soft-touch, and the back is fully decked out in something called Crystal Reflective Process, which makes it look like you're holding a star field in your hand. There's an 8 megapixel, 1080p camera on back that shames the rather poor shooter on Samsung's last-generation Galaxy Nexus, and a 1.3 megapixel, 1080p camera on the front. A monstrous Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro processor powers the whole thing, but while it has all the usual Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and NFC radios you'd expect, so far there's absolutely no LTE version in sight.

Android 4.2 shares the same Jelly Bean code name as it's predecessor, but comes with a few great new features like Photosphere which wraps panoramas around you. There's also be lock screen widgets, an improved Gmail app, fast access to radio toggles, and since it's a Nexus, easy access to developer settings. That goes along with all the other marquee Jelly Bean features like the Google Now voice assistant and actionable notifications. Pretty much everything that makes Android so powerful, flexible, and customizable.

In the Nexus 4 review Phil Nickinson of Android Central summed it up like this:

The Nexus 4, LG's first phone in Google's premier line, easily is the best "stock" Android phone thus far, and it's the best in the Nexus line since HTC's Nexus One. The hardware is more top-of-the-line than we're used to in the Nexus platform. The design improves on what LG's done with its own Optimus G. And the software improvements in Android 4.2 make the platform that much more impressive. The phone's not without compromise, but it's also an easy phone to recommend, especially for the price.

The Nexus 4 comes in 8 and 16GB versions. If you buy it direct from Google, you can get it unlocked for $299 or $349. If Google doesn't sell (read: subsidize) it in your area, however, you're looking a paying a bunch more.

Apple iPhone 5

The iPhone 5 has a newly re-designed unibody aluminum chassis to allow for a bigger 4-inch screen in a phone that's 12% smaller by volume. It's taller but not wider, thinner and also lighter. That 4-inch screen also uses in-cell technology to combine the touch sensor right into the LCD. At 1136x640 and 326ppi, it's still backlit LED, and still IPS, and technically the best, most advanced panel on the planet for now. Apple also rolled their own, manually-set Apple A6 processor this time, based on ARM v7s, for amazing performance and excellent power management. There's still no NFC, but there is CDMA, HSPA, and international LTE.

iOS 6 comes loaded on the iPhone 5, and includes a new, controversial Maps app, some great extensions to Siri, deep Facebook integration, Passbook, and enhancements to FaceTime, Mail, Safari, Photo Stream, Panorama, and Accessibility. And because Apple makes both the hardware and the software, there's no integration, no added interface layers, and a seamless experience overall.

iTunes has the biggest international content footprint, so if you're into buying your music, TV, and movies, there's a better chance Apple will take your money than anyone else. They also have the free iCloud service for backup, restore, and sync, as well as Apple Retail Stores with Genius Bars which, if you ever break your phone, you'll absolutely consider a killer service.

In the iPhone 5 review, I summed it up as follows:

Taller, thinner, faster, lighter, brighter; the iPhone 5 represents nothing more nor less than the latest, relentless iteration on the Platonic ideal Apple has been striving towards for almost a decade. Redesigned in every way but shape, compromised but true to its purpose, the iPhone 5 is once again the best iPhone Apple has ever made, and one of the best phones ever made. Period.

The iPhone 5 comes in 16, 32, and 64GB versions. The price on-contract is $199, $299, and $399, unlocked and off-contract is $650, $750, and $850.

Apple iPhone 5 vs. Google/LG Nexus 4: The bottom line

The story of iPhone and Android is one of those classics that just seems to keep getting remade. It's one of precision vs. power, elegance vs. enormity, usability vs. customizability, and Apple's ecosystem vs. Google's ecosystem.

The Nexus 4, if you have a Google Play Store in your country and can buy it directly, is the best bang for the buck in high-end smartphones these days. (Although you'll still end up paying for your carrier plan, basically making any device savings irrelevant.) However, it won't come with more than 16GB of storage, and it won't come with LTE. (And don't let them fool you, I get 50Mbps down at the local coffee shop, HSPA+ is lucky to get half that.) As of right now, however, the Nexus 4 is pretty much the ultimate Android developer/tweaker phone.

The iPhone 5 is more expensive, but it's also built, glitter aside, like nothing else on the planet. You can get it with up to 64GB of storage and with LTE in most places that have LTE. And for most people, most of the time, iOS and everything that comes with it remains the best choice. The iPhone 5 is still king of the mainstream.

The old cliche remains true. If you want something that works the way you want it, get the Nexus 4. If you want something that just works, get the iPhone 5.

Cells from skin create model of blinding eye disease

ScienceDaily (Nov. 8, 2012) ? For the first time, Wisconsin researchers have taken skin from patients and, using induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC) technology, turned them into a laboratory model for an inherited type of macular degeneration.

Dr. David Gamm, director of the UW's McPherson Eye Research Institute, said that while Best disease is relatively rare, having a patient-specific model of the eye disease, which destroys the macula of the retina, could lead to a greater understanding of more common eye disorders such as age-related macular degeneration.

"This model gives us a chance to understand the biological effects of human gene mutations in a relatively expeditious manner,'' says Gamm, associate professor of ophthalmology and visual sciences and pediatrics. "Ultimately, we hope the model will help us craft treatments to slow or reverse the course of Best Disease."

Gamm and lead researchers Dr. Ruchira Singh and Dr. Wei Shen, all members of the UW's Waisman Center, took skin samples from members of two Chicago-area families with Best disease. Children in those families have a 50-percent chance of inheriting the gene that causes the disease, which begins destroying the macula as early as age three. Using samples of affected and unaffected siblings, they turned the skin into stem cells, then into retinal pigment epithelium, the cells of the eye that are affected by the disease.

In the laboratory dish, they were able to track the changes that underlie a lesion on the retina that resembles "egg yolk," and progresses to a stage called "scrambled egg," which destroys the central vision.

The UW model revealed some of the cellular processes causing the disease. The models of the Best disease patients showed a buildup of fluid and old photoreceptor cells, indicating something gone wrong with the ability to degrade and remove debris such as dead cells. On a molecular level, the Best cells were slow to degrade rhodopsin, a biological pigment in photoreceptor cells, and had differences in calcium signaling and oxidative stress.

"These results give us some ideas where to look for therapies that would allow us to interfere with the disease process,'' says Gamm. "And the stem cell model gives us a chance to test those therapies before trying them on patients."

Even more important, on a human level, is how excited some of the family members were to participate in understanding and eventually treating a disease that has plagued generations of their families.

"These family members know they're not getting treated directly as a result of this study, but they're doing it out of concern for the next generation,'' Gamm said. "That brings peace to them, to know that they're not passive victims of this disease, but instead, active players in the discovery process."

The chief research officer of the Foundation Fighting Blindness, which helped fund the Best disease project, says the method holds promise for a number of retinal conditions.

"We are delighted by the highly innovative research of Dr. Gamm and his lab in harnessing stem cells to better understand complex retinal diseases and move us closer to vision-saving treatments and cures,'' says Dr. Stephen Rose. "His techniques can be used to help characterize and overcome the entire spectrum of inherited retinal conditions."

South Africa coal companies, unions agree wage deal

JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) - Coal firms in South Africa, including Anglo American , have signed a deal to raise certain entry-level worker wages by up to 5 percent, the Chamber of Mines said on Wednesday, to prevent labor unrest in the sector from spreading to coal.

More than 80,000 miners, or 15 percent of the industry's workforce, have downed tools in recent weeks in the gold and platinum sectors in often violent, illegal strikes, undermining already shaky growth in Africa's biggest economy.

If the unrest spread to coal mines it would have an impact reaching far beyond the industry, with some 85 percent of South Africa's electricity generated by coal-fired plants.

Phillemon Motlhamme, deputy head for industrial relations at the chamber, said the body which represents the industry was approached by unions in September to ensure that illegal strikes, with a death toll of more than 50 this year, would not spread to coal.

"The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) and the other two unions asked how we can strengthen our collective bargaining framework and ensure continuous stability in the coal sector," he said.

Salaries will be raised by 5 percent for entry-level employees at Anglo, Kangra Coal, Xstrata Coal , and Exxaro's Mpumalanga operations, effective November 1.

Exxaro will give smaller wage increases to workers in other categories, while Anglo, Kangra, Optimum Coal and Xstrata have offered once-off payment of 2,000 rand ($230) to workers in higher levels.

While there were some disruptions to operations at smaller coal mines due to legal strikes recently, most companies in the sector have not been affected. ($1 = 8.6523 South African rand) (Reporting by Agnieszka Flak; Editing by Ed Stoddard)

American Suzuki Files For Bankruptcy

Suzuki Logo
American Suzuki Motor Corp. filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection Monday night. The company will discontinue automotive sales and focus solely on motorcycles and ATVs.

Based in California, the manufacturer was the sole distributor of Suzuki vehicles in the U.S., The New York Times reports. Slow automobile sales and unfavorable exchange rates discouraged further investment in the U.S. car industry, although the decisions of the American arm of the company will not change the parent company, Suzuki of Japan.

?The most important thing for you to know is that we intend to continue to operate our Motorcycles/ATV and Marine businesses as usual,? Suzuki chairman Takashi Iwatsuki wrote to customers, as quoted by Cycle News. ?We remain very proud of our high-quality motorcycles, ATV and marine products, and we will continue to bring to the U.S. market more of the products that you have come to know and expect.?

Even with the shift, Suzuki plans to continue to uphold its motorsports presence in the U.S., and it will likely remain one of the top providers of ATV riding gear and motorcycle gear. Both car and motorcycle consumers will also still receive customer support, the news source reports.

a painted fall tablescape (fall table ideas) | the handmade home

Hello lovely friends! We hope everyone is enjoying this fall season? We really can?t believe it?s already November, but we?re ready to enjoy the holidays with family and friends. Our greatest drama ever pergola is well under way, and we hope to stop, catch our breath + enjoy the weather on our new back porch redo very soon! We?re a little overdue for slowing down. And s?mores. I really need some s?mores? digression.

Today, I thought we?d cover one of my favorite subjects. With the age of our children, it isn?t really practical so I don?t get to do it very often? but every now and again it?s oh so fun.

Every year for Thanksgiving and Christmas, my mom broke out the starched table cloth. We each had our own special pieces we used, with little bunnies on them. If your family was anything like ours, it was one of the few times we ate in the dining room all year. And we would wait patiently while she slaved away in the kitchen. I was always in charge of setting the table. There?s just something kind of reserved and magical about the table at the holidays. I look forward to creating the same traditions for our own children. At the drop of a hat they get a special table and a parade.

This year?s theme for our holidaisical hoorah : a painted fall tablescape.

I?ve decided to move the party to our kitchen this year, as I never really dress up that table. And I think it?s a wasted shame. So I layered aquas and greens with punches of deeper fall-esque hues. We combined various china patterns, with a hodgepodge of finishes? we were pleased with the fun feeling this table gave off!

From an old hobnail vase and candles with slices of wood, to jars with jute and Staffordshire, this painted fall tablescape is layered with new and old, but basically made of things we already had. I threw on some new fabric and we had a fresh look. We even used a few of our leftover metallic fairytale pumpkins for an added touch. Centerpieces composed of feathers, twigs and flowers make for textural interest on our table, and we topped every plate off with these handmade feathers? they can easily double as place settings. Stay tuned: We have a little tutorial on that coming up tomorrow.

So today I thought I?d discuss a few of our fave tips to follow when it comes to creating a fun tablescape.

First things first: I use two main guidelines when it comes to creating, but these are fine tuned towards the table sector of life:

? Lose the Proper -?Just like the rest of ?the rules? I?ve broken in my home, being a tried and true southerner, I tend to hold fast to the ?rules? for setting a table. While those are all fine and dandy and I?m sure one day I?ll use them when I feel like it, don?t let it paralyze your creative juices when it comes to setting your table for the holidays. I realized I was angsting way too much over the third fork from the left and the third glass to the right. I don?t really own any fine silver, and ?proper? is for the cast of Downton Abbey circa 1895?

If you want to put your silverware in a bundle with cool fabric, do it. If you want to bring in twigs from your yard for an interesting centerpiece, go for it. I?m done with stressing. Life is short.?My home is fun and so the table will be, also.

? Cheat Like the Dickens Wherever You Can.?Mix your every day plates with fine china. The plain with the patterned. The jars with the antiques and crystal. Make it go the distance. Cut corners in a stylish way. Think beyond the ?expected? when it comes to furnishings for your table. Creating a table can be expensive. For special occassions, I order fabric and play with it. I make sure it can be washed, but I don?t sew it. I just fold it and throw it on. (See: table runner + main table covering) Why? Because I may want it later for pillows, and I wont? be wasting perfectly good fabric for a few shenanigans on a table design. Yes, the extra effort put into stitching is awesome for that extra polished touch, and sweet and whatevs. So I use an iron to ?fake? the seams. I like to switch it out often and in addition to what doctors like to call a little bit of a fabric hoarding problem, I have three small kids. It is what it is.

On Fabrics: For this table, I started with a basic linen (I?ve had it for a while-via fabric.com) mixed with this for the runner?and this for the napkins?(now sold out from my original source)?mixed with a turquoise broadcloth I scored at our local fabric store. The pillows you see are Thomas Paul?(I?ve had those for a while) + Premier Prints?(both now sold out from their original sources). The napkins were some I?ve held on to since we were married, layered wth fabric scraps, ribbon and jute. {Don?t ever purchase anything online without checking out a coupon code ? retailmenot.com is always a great source.}

And finally, a few good principles of design: I treat my tables (the principles of art and design applied)?like my spaces:

1. Layer -?From fabrics, florals and accessories? Treat a fine fall table like a stylin? fall outfit. Build and plan from the main piece you choose and work around it as your springboard. If you need to mix in a few twigs with the flowers, then go for it. Think through carrying out various textures, accessories and touches of color. Which brings me to?

2. Contrast -?Remember these two points of reference to create interest: A. Colors: Cool with warm, light with dark + B. Materials: Think jute with crystal, every day with fine china. Play around with these two simple concepts in your head, and you just can?t go wrong with keeping it fresh.

3. Symmetry + Varying Heights ? Apply this to everything on your table.?Think of your table as a level plane, and a standing challenge to see what you can do with it to mix it up a little. Varying heights of plates and place settings, glass placement, vases, and everything in between.?Think of your centerpiece as the crowning touch to your tablescape. Whether you decide on symmetry or odd numbers, keep it fresh and interesting with a combination of flowers, and other elements from the outdoors.

I?m ready to tackle the holiday season with some fun ideas! What are some of your best tips for a stellar table? The most important part of all: The guests. What are some of your favorite around-the-table traditions with your loved ones during the holidays? What do you enjoy the most? I?m looking to ressurect some of that bunny china with my own kids.

Stay tuned-I?ll be back tomorrow with that painted feather tutorial. Have an inspired day, everyone!
