Hundreds of Venezuelans poured into the streets of Caracas to mourn President Hugo Chavez after learning of his death Tuesday.

Chavez, 58, the socialist leader who ran Venezuela for 14 years, lost his two-year battle with cancer, which was first detected in his pelvic region in 2011.

"It's a moment of deep pain," Vice President Nicolas Maduro said, as he announced Chavez's passing and urged the nation not to resort to expressions of violence.

The deceased leader's daughter, Mar?a Gabriela Chavez, tweeted to her followers: "I don't have words. Eternally, THANK YOU! Strength! We must follow his example. We must continue building our NATION! Always daddy of mine!"

A public funeral is scheduled for Chavez on Friday, followed by seven days of mourning.

Venezuelans -- some in tears, some chanting "Long live Chavez!" -- gathered near the Miraflores presidential palace and outside the military hospital where Chavez died, The Associated Press reported.

One of the world's most flamboyant leaders lost his two-year battle with cancer on Tuesday, ending 14 years of a tumultuous and often bitterly divisive socialist reign. NBC's Mark Potter reports.

"I feel such big pain I can't even speak," Yamilina Barrios, a 39-year-old office worker, told the AP. "He was the best thing the country had ... I adore him. Let's hope the country calms down and we can continue the tasks he left us."

"He was our father. 'Chavismo' will not end. We are his people. We will continue to fight!" Nancy Jotiya, 56, in Caracas' downtown Bolivar Square, told Reuters.

As the streets filled with people and stores closed early, additional police were sent to monitor the crowds. Reuters reported isolated violent incidents, including the burning of tents used by students who had been protesting against secrecy surrounding Chavez's condition.

The oil-financed social policies implemented throughout his rule earned Chavez the support of the poor but also disapproval from Venezuela's business community and the wealthy.

"At last!" shouted some women in an upscale neighborhood, according to Reuters.

Condolences also poured in from leaders and politicians around the world.

Supporters of Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez in the United States and elsewhere mourn his death.

Among those who made public remarks was Henrique Capriles Radonski, who faced Chavez in the nation's elections last October.

"We hurt for the feelings of pain of the deceased president's family, and of his colleagues and many Venezuelans, our most heartfelt condolences," Capriles said. "This is not a moment to highlight what separates us. In hours of anguish, families and a people, who are a great family, must unite in prayer, in mediation. Not time of difference, time of union."

Capriles lost to Chavez in October, but the latter was not sworn in due to his illness.

Venezuelan Foreign Minister Elias Jaua said Tuesday that Maduro will be interim president, and also run as the governing party candidate in elections that will be called within 30 days. Jaua said it was Chavez's wish that Maduro should be the socialist party candidate.

According to Venezuela's constitution, the executive vice president should be put in charge when the president dies. The constitution, however, also specifies that the speaker of the National Assembly, currently Diosdado Cabello, should be in charge if a president can't be sworn in.

Driving enthusiasts who love feeling the wind in their face may find bliss with this conceptual choptop version of the Scion FR-S/Subaru BRZ (or Toyota FT-86, as it's known overseas.) While this ragtop retains its back seats, we still wonder when we'll see turbocharged versions of these nimble 2+2s.

Obama Cancels White House Tours, GOP Rep. Tries to Cancel His Golf Outings

On Tuesday the Obama administration announced that due to sequestration cuts it is canceling all White House tours as of Saturday. The move is sure to create headaches for members of Congress, as visitors must schedule tours through their representative. In an effort to make sequestration more irritating for Obama, Texas Republican Rep. Louie Gohmert added an amendment to the resolution bill to keep government funded that stated, ?None of the funds made available by a division of this Act may be used to transport the President to or from a golf course until public tours of the White House resume." The amendment won't be considered on the floor, but if Obama had been forced off the golf course he could have turned to his other totally non-controversial hobby: Doing skeet shooting.

US scientists report big jump in heat-trapping CO2

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The amount of heat-trapping carbon dioxide in the air jumped dramatically in 2012, making it very unlikely that global warming can be limited to another 2 degrees as many global leaders have hoped, new federal figures show.

Scientists say the rise in CO2 reflects the world's economy revving up and burning more fossil fuels, especially in China.

Carbon dioxide levels jumped by 2.67 parts per million since 2011 to total just under 395 parts per million, says Pieter Tans, who leads the greenhouse gas measurement team for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

That's the second highest rise in carbon emissions since record-keeping began in 1959. The measurements are taken from air samples captured away from civilization near a volcano in Mauna Loa, Hawaii.

More coal-burning power plants, especially in the developing world, are the main reason emissions keep going up ? even as they have declined in the U.S. and other places, in part through conservation and cleaner energy.

At the same time, plants and the world's oceans which normally absorb some carbon dioxide, last year took in less than they do on average, says John Reilly, co-director of Joint Program on the Science and Policy of Global Change. Plant and ocean absorption of carbon varies naturally year to year.

But, Tans tells The Associated Press the major factor is ever-rising fossil fuel burning: "It's just a testament to human influence being dominant."

Only 1998 had a bigger annual increase in carbon dioxide, the primary greenhouse gas from human activity. That year, 2.93 parts per million of CO2 was added. From 2000 to 2010, the world averaged a yearly rise of just under 2 parts per million. Levels rose by less than 1 part per million in the 1960s.

In 2009, the world's nations agreed on a voluntary goal of limiting global warming to 3.6 degrees Fahrenheit over pre-industrial temperature levels. Since the mid-1800s temperatures haven already risen about 1.5 degrees. Current pollution trends translate to another 2.5 to 4.5 degrees of warming within the next several decades, Reilly says.

"The prospects of keeping climate change below that (2-degree goal) are fading away," Tans says.

Scientists track carbon pollution both by monitoring what comes out of factories and what winds up in the atmosphere. Both are rising at rates faster than worst-case scenarios that climate scientists used in their most recent international projections, according to Pennsylvania State University climate scientist Michael Mann.

That means harmful effects of climate change will happen sooner, Mann says.

NRA chief vows court battle over any new gun laws

NRA Executive Vice President Wayne LaPierre at the Western Hunting and Conservation Expo in Salt Lake City in February.??If President Barack Obama successfully drives new gun laws through Congress, the National Rifle Association will fight them in the courts, NRA CEO and executive vice president Wayne LaPierre said in an interview published Monday.

?There definitely will be legal challenges,? LaPierre told Field & Stream as part of the magazine?s series on the response to the slaughter at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn. (Vice President Joe Biden also sat down for a question-and-answer session).

?The Second Amendment is one of our most basic freedoms,? LaPierre said. ?And so we?re going to stand up for this freedom in every way possible. Whether it?s fighting the legislative fight, whether it?s fighting in the courts.?

The NRA opposes key proposals in Obama?s response to the slaughter at Sandy Hook: a renewed assault weapons ban, universal background checks and a limit on the number of rounds in an ammunition clip. Republicans have signaled that they will oppose the weapons ban, though the fate of the other measures is unclear.

Las Vegas Sands Finds Possible Crimes in Bribery of Chinese Officials - SEC and DOJ investigation of Venetian/Palazzo parent ongoing

LasVegasSandsLas Vegas Sands Corp. may have violated federal law that bans the bribing of foreign public officials, the casino operator told the Securities and Exchange Commission on Friday.

In a one-sentence statement within the company?s annual report filing, Las Vegas Sands said its Audit Committee found possible violations of the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act.

?As part of the annual audit of the company?s financial statements, the Audit Committee advised the company and its independent accountants that it had reached certain preliminary findings, including that there were likely violations of the books and records and internal controls provisions of the ( act),? Las Vegas Sands said in its Form 10-K filing.

But Las Vegas Sands added it has ?improved its practices with respect to books and records and internal controls? in recent years.

The SEC asked the company to produce documents relating to its compliance with the Foreign Corrupt Practices in February 2011.

Las Vegas Sands also was advised the U.S. Department of Justice was conducting a similar investigation.

Las Vegas Sands operates casinos in Macau and Singapore, which provide the company almost 80 percent of its annual revenues and cash flow.

The investigations arose after allegations of bribery of foreign officials were raised in the wrongful termination lawsuit filed in October 2010 by Steven Jacobs, the company?s former CEO of Sands China. The lawsuit is still pending in Clark County District Court.

In its annual report filing, Las Vegas Sands said the preliminary findings of the audit committee and attorneys found that any violations do not have a material effect on the financial statements of the company, nor do they warrant any restatement of the Las Vegas Sands? past financial statements.

Las Vegas Sands said the possible violations ?do not represent a material weakness in the company?s internal controls over financial reporting? as of the end of 2012.
