Ducks get commitment from junior college freshman Elgin Cook, son of former NBA All-Star

The son of a former NBA Defensive Player of the year, Elgin Cook says defensive effort hasn?t been a problem for him.

?It was important to him, so it was important to me,? Cook said, referring to his father, Alvin Robertson, a four-time All-Star with the San Antonio Spurs and Milwaukee Bucks.

Cook hopes his defensive energy will endear him to Oregon fans next season, when the junior college transfer could be in line to earn a starting job for the Ducks. A 6-foot-6, 195-pound freshman forward at Northwest Florida State College, Cook made a verbal commitment to the Ducks on Wednesday, becoming Oregon?s fifth recruit in this class.

He chose Oregon over Gonzaga, among others, and will have three years of eligibility with the Ducks. The spring signing period begins April 17.

Cook is averaging 14.8 points and 6.0 rebounds while shooting 61.4 percent from the field for Northwest Florida State, which is 25-2 and ranked No. 3 in the country. The team also includes the nation?s top junior college prospect, point guard Chris Jones, who has signed with Louisville.

Cook was a first-team all-league pick and the conference freshman of the year, according to his coach, Steve Forbes.

?He?s had a fabulous season for us,? Forbes said. ?He?s a very, very athletic player and can really defend multiple positions.?

Cook visited Oregon two weeks ago with his father; they sat behind the Oregon bench during the Ducks? last-second loss to California at Matthew Knight Arena.

?I just fell in love with the place,? Cook said. ?During the tour, they took me to meet some academic advisers and they laid out a plan for me, and that was just awesome. ? And the fans were crazy.?

After that, Cook and his father visited Gonzaga, but Cook said Oregon was a better fit for him, based on his relationship with UO coach Dana Altman and assistant Tony Stubblefield. Oregon is graduating four seniors after this season, so the chance to play significant minutes helped, too.

?Elgin is smart. He saw that,? Forbes said. ?He made a very informed decision.?

Said Cook: ?I want to come in right away, run the floor, block some shots and make some plays.?

Cook was a former City Conference player of the year in Milwaukee, Wis. He had originally signed with Iowa State but did not qualify academically out of high school.

Cook redshirted at Northwest Florida State last season to get his academics in order, and he is on schedule to earn his degree there this summer, Forbes said.

The Ducks signed three recruits in the fall: Jordan Bell, a 6-foot-8 power forward from Long Beach, Calif; 6-9 Brazilian center Cristiano Felicio; and A.J. Lapray, a 6-4 wing from Salem's Sprague High. Another recruit, 6-4 shooting guard Jalil Abdul-Bassit out of North Idaho JC, has given a verbal commitment to the Ducks.

Nasdaq, SharesPost to set up exchange for unlisted stock

(Reuters) - Nasdaq OMX Group Inc said it will form a marketplace for trading in shares in unlisted companies in a joint venture with SharesPost Inc, whose private trading platform has run into regulatory trouble.

The stock exchange operator will own a majority of the venture, Nasdaq Private Market. Specific terms were not disclosed.

The new market, to be based in San Francisco, will launch later this year, pending regulatory approvals, and will be led by SharesPost founder Greg Brogger.

SharesPost's online trading platform, which matched buyers and sellers of unlisted shares, was charged by the Securities and Exchange Commission last March for failing to register as a broker-dealer before offering securities.

SharesPost's broker dealer and investment advisory business will continue to operate separately from the joint venture, the companies said in a statement.

SharesPost began in 2009 and its fortunes rose in step with technology startups such as Facebook Inc and LinkedIn , which traded on the market before they went public.

Recent legislation, the Jumpstart Our Business Startups Act, has boosted opportunities for trading of unlisted companies. Under the act, an unlisted company can have 2,000 shareholders, up from 500.

Humongous camels once roamed the Arctic, say scientists

Paleontologists in Canada's northernmost province have unearthed the shinbone of what they say was a giant camel.

By Tanya Lewis,?LiveScience Staff Writer / March 5, 2013

High Arctic camels, like those shown in this illustration, lived on Ellesmere Island during the Pliocene warm period about 3.5 million years ago.

Camels are the poster animals for the desert, but researchers now have evidence that these shaggy beasts once lived in the Canadian High Arctic.

The fossil remains of a 3.5-million-year-old camel were found on?Ellesmere Island?in Canada's northernmost territory, Nunavut. The camel was about 30 percent bigger than?modern camels?and was identified using a technique called collagen fingerprinting. The finding, detailed today (March 5) in the journal Nature Communications, suggests that modern camels stemmed from giant relatives that lived in a forested Arctic that was somewhat warmer than today.

"It's the first evidence that camels were ever there," lead study author and paleobiologist Natalia Rybczynski of the Canadian Museum of Nature in Ottawa told LiveScience."It is surprising because usually we associate camels with arid and semi-arid habitats."

Camels, which belong to the?Camelus?genus, originated in North America during the Eocene period about 45 million years ago, and later crossed to Eurasia over the Bering Isthmus, a landbridge between Alaska and Russia. Their closest relatives are llamas, alpacas, vicunas and guanacos.[See Images of the Arctic Camel and Fossils]?

The researchers found about 30 pieces of bone that were part of a camel's tibia, or shinbone. The fossil's location moves the known range of North American camels northward by about 745 miles (1,200 kilometers).

The camel's identity and age were determined via collagen fingerprinting, a technique that measures the amount of a bone protein called Type I collagen. Different mammals have characteristic amounts of this protein, which survives longer than many other biological molecules in the body.

The team dated the fossil to roughly 3.5 million years ago, a period known as the mid-Pliocene warm period. The global temperature was about 3.5 to 6 degrees Fahrenheit (2 to 3 degrees Celsius) warmer than today, Rybczynski said, and about 33 degrees F (18 degrees C) warmer where the camel was found, with temperatures averaging around 30 degrees F (minus 1.4 degree C). The?Canadian High Arctic was forested?then.

The fossil specimen closely resembles modern dromedary camels, based on the fingerprinting, but was about a third larger in size. It also bears similarity to the giant Yukon camels that lived about 1,240 miles (2,000 km) away from the site where the ancient camel bones were discovered.

The researchers plan to continue searching for camel remains in the High Arctic. "We hope to find more," Rybczynski said.

Martha Stewart says J.C. Penney's deal didn't violate contract with Macy's

Home decorating and cooking expert Martha Stewart testified that striking a deal with J.C. Penney's did not breach her contract to sell her home decor line exclusively at Macy's.?

Martha Stewart arrives to court in New York, Tuesday. Macy's Inc. is suing the media and merchandising company Stewart founded for breaching an exclusive contract when she signed a deal with J.C. Penney in December 2011 to open shops at most of its stores this spring.

Home decor and food guru Martha Stewart testified in court on Tuesday that she did nothing wrong when she signed an agreement to open shops within most of J.C. Penney's stores across the country.

Stewart testified in New York State Supreme Court in a trial over whether the company she founded breached its contract to sell cookware, bedding and other items exclusively at Macy's when she inked the deal with Penney.

Stewart's appearance, which followed a lineup of other top brass including the CEOs of both Macy's Inc. and J.C. Penney Co., attracted a lot of attention from the media. So much so that the judge opened up the jury box to make room for the expanded audience, and spectators had to wait behind a roped line to enter the courtroom.

During four hours of testimony, Stewart, who founded Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia Inc., denied Macy's allegations that she did anything unethical and said she was only looking to expand her brand.

Stewart said it's Macy's that didn't uphold its end of the agreement to try to maximize the potential of her business. She said her brand had grown to about $300 million at Macy's, but the business was now "static" at the department store chain. She said she had hoped the business would exceed $400 million.

"We were disappointed," Stewart, 71, wearing a light brown tunic and a mini skirt, testified. "We got to a certain dollar amount and struggled and never got any further."

The trial, which began Feb. 20, centers around whether Macy's has the exclusive right to sell some Martha Stewart branded products such as cookware, bedding and bath items.

Penney signed a pact in December 2011 with Martha Stewart Living to open shops at most of its 1,100 stores by this spring. A month later, Macy's renewed its long-standing exclusive deal with Martha Stewart until 2018, then it sued both Martha Stewart Living and Penney.

Macy's is trying to block Penney's from opening the Martha Stewart shops within its stores. The company also is seeking to stop Martha Stewart from providing any designs to Penney ? whether or not they carry the Martha Stewart label.

Martha Stewart and Penney are using what they believe is a loophole in the agreement between Macy's and Martha Stewart to move forward with their deal. It's a provision that allows Martha Stewart to sell some of the products that it offers in Macy's stores at Martha Stewart shops, too.

According to Martha Stewart lawyers, because the Macy's agreement doesn't specify that Martha Stewart stores have to be "stand alone" locations, the mini shops within Penney's stores would not violate the contract. Stewart said in court Tuesday that even Amazon.com could be considered a store, given that shoppers are shifting more to online buying.

"I don't think you need walls to be a store," she said.

The trial has revealed some of the drama that took place behind-the-scenes as the Martha Stewart-Penney deal came to be. During his testimony on Friday, Penney CEO Johnson rejected claims by Macy's lawyers that he plotted to push Martha Stewart to breach her deal with Macy's with the goal of eventually becoming the sole carrier of some of Stewart's products.
