GOP opens 2013 with money advantage over Democrats

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The Republican National Committee is starting 2013 with a financial advantage over its Democratic rivals.

The RNC raised $6.9 million in January and ended the month with $7.1 million in cash ? along with no debt.

The Democratic National Committee brought in $4.3 million in January and ended the month with $4.7 million in cash.

But the DNC is carrying a large debt of $20.7 million, down slightly from the end of the year. Democrats racked up the debt while helping President Barack Obama hold onto the White House.

Party committees filed monthly financial reports Wednesday with the Federal Election Commission.

Fruit fly moms medicate young with alcohol

Female parasitic wasps have successfully infected fruit fly larvae, shown here; the wasps lay their eggs inside of the larvae, which then hatch and eat the maggots from the inside out.

It's not likely anyone would nominate a fruit fly for a "Best Mother of the Year" award ? after laying her eggs, the insect hits the road, never to be heard from again. But it now turns out that fruit fly mothers aren't completely uncaring and actually try to give their offspring a fighting chance at life.

If she spots a deadly parasitic wasp around, the female fruit fly will "medicate" her offspring by laying her eggs in an environment with high levels of alcohol, which is very toxic to the wasps but not to the flies, new research shows.

Throughout the world, parasitic wasps?are a bane to fruit flies. Female wasps lay their eggs inside?fly larvae, which then hatch and eat the maggots from the inside out. Fly larvae have a natural immune response to try to kill the wasp, but the venom the wasp injects along with her egg sometimes counters this defense.?

"Who survives is totally dependent on the fly strain and the wasp strain," said lead researcher Todd Schlenke, a biologist at Emory University in Georgia. "You never really know who's going to win."

Last year, Schlenke and his team discovered that infected fly larvae have another trick up their sleeves to defeat their enemies: alcohol. Unlike wasp parasites, fruit flies have a high tolerance for alcohol, likely because the fly larvae live in rotting fruit, where a lot of fermentation is taking place. So if a maggot has a wasp growing inside of it, it will seek out and consume food with high levels of alcohol?to kill the parasite. [The 10 Most Diabolical and Disgusting Parasites]

Researchers placed female fruit flies in cages with alcohol-laced and no-alcohol foods, finding that when wasps were around the female flies preferred laying eggs in the alcoholic dishes.

This finding led the researchers to wonder if adult fruit flies, which don't get infected by the wasps, know to use the chemical weapon against the parasites. "Would the flies change where they lay their eggs if a wasp is around?" Schlenke said.

Battling with alcohol
In the new study, Schlenke and his team stuck adult female fruit flies (Drosophila melanogaster) into a cage with two food dishes, one alcohol-free and the other with 6 percent alcohol. If no wasps were present, only around 40 percent of the flies laid their eggs in the alcoholic food. But if the researchers put female wasp parasites (Leptopilina heterotoma) into the cage, about 90 percent of the flies laid their eggs in the alcohol-laden dishes.

This behavior, the researchers found, lasts for several days. When the fruit flies were "pre-exposed" to the wasps, they remembered the danger and continued to prefer laying eggs in the alcoholic environment for up to four days after the wasps left the cage.

The researchers then wondered how, exactly, the fruit flies sense the presence of the wasps. By using mutant flies?that either couldn't see or smell, they discovered the flies recognize the wasps based on sight ? an interesting ability considering that the flies had been reared in a wasp-free lab for generations.

"The flies have never seen wasps in their lives, neither have their parents or their grandparents," Schlenke explained, adding that the flies must have "innate search images for wasps."

Interestingly, these search images are sex-specific;?the fruit flies don't seem to care if male wasps are around. Male parasitic wasps have noticeably longer antennae than female wasps, so the researchers tested if clipping the males' antennae would trick the flies. It didn't. The fruit flies somehow still knew the wasps were male and stuck to the alcohol-free dishes, suggesting they recognize the female wasps based on some other characteristic. [Googly Eyes: Photos of Striking Wasp Faces]

A widespread behavior?
Schlenke is curious to see how widespread this "behavioral immune response" is. In the current study, the team found that a host of other booze-tolerant flies also pre-emptively medicate their young with alcohol when they spot the wasps. But fly species that don't live in rotting fruit never choose the alcohol-laced food over the alcohol-free food, even if a wasp is in sight.

Do these flies, and maybe even other types of insects, have a different immune tactic to fight parasitic wasps?

For instance, some fly species live on mushrooms, which contain a variety of toxins, Schlenke said. "I wonder if mushroom flies are able to use the mushroom toxins to protect themselves against wasps," he said.

These behavioral examples would help show that the immune system is made up of more than just immune-activated cells, such as antibodies, Schlenke said. Specifically, immune behaviors, such as medicating oneself?or another, are also part of an organism's immune system.

"We need to think of the immune system as a broader set of structures and processes that protect an organism from infection," Schlenke said.

The research is detailed in Friday's?issue of the journal Science.

MLB at bat 2013 app warms up for spring training, starts pitching in BB10's bullpen

For some, the change of the season is marked not by calendars or climate changes, but by the beat of sports fandom. Rest easy, baseball fans: spring is finally here. Naturally, Major League Baseball is heralding in the weather by updating its MLB At Bat app for 2013 spring training, touting new features for Android and iOS users alike. The apps updated team pages, retooled navigation and classic games library are universally available to both Android and iOS users, but the iPhone will score an enhanced and searchable video library and an exclusive home screen customization feature. MLB promises to pipe in more functionality before the season opens, however -- including mobile access for BlackBerry 10 users. What hasn't changed? The price, of course: Android subscribers will need to pony up $20 for the year, while iOS retains its $3 monthly subscription plan. Slide past the break for the official press release.

The 40-yard dash is the marquee event of the NFL Scouting Combine, but it?s also often disparaged by those who say that a player?s speed in running 40 yards in a straight line while wearing shorts and a T-shirt does not say much about what kind of football player he is.

Count longtime NFL executive Bill Polian among those who say the 40 does, in fact, matter.

Polian, who ran the draft room for the Bills for eight years, the Panthers for three years and the Colts for 15 years, said on NFL Live that when he looks at the ways a player can show his stuff at the Combine, it begins with showing off his pure speed.

?No. 1, the 40 times. If you are a believer in speed ? and I am, and was ? the 40 times are very important,? Polian said.

Polian said that while he wouldn?t get too obsessed with separating players by the hundredths of a second, there are certain 40 times that a player simply has to meet if he wants to be considered a high-level draft prospect at his position.

?There are benchmarks,? Polian said. ?A guy doesn?t need to run a 4.42 as opposed to someone who runs a 4.43, but they have to get under the barrier that a club sets for each position. So a receiver who?s more than 4.5? His stock?s going to fall, and there?s no two ways about it.?

Polian had some big first-round hits by drafting for speed early in his tenure with the Colts, including Edgerrin James, Reggie Wayne and Dwight Freeney. Unfortunately for Polian, he missed with speedy first-round picks like Donald Brown, Anthony Gonzalez and Jerry Hughes later in his tenure.

Those misses do not, however, shake Polian?s belief in the 40.

(AP) ? A New York man once dubbed by prosecutors as the government's most wanted deadbeat parent pleaded guilty Thursday to owing more than $1.2 million to three children from two failed marriages.

Robert Sand, 50, pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court in Central Islip on Long Island to two counts of failing to pay child support. Assistant U.S. Attorney Alan Bode said in court that the child support orders, which were issued on Long Island, have been in arrears since at least 2002.

The figure cited by Bode includes interest and penalties. The prosecutor declined to comment to reporters after the court proceeding.

Sand told the judge he fled first to Florida and then to Thailand Sand's attorney, Glenn Obedin, said his client had grown tired of living on the run and contacted authorities late last year.

Sand left Thailand, where he had worked in an assortment of odd jobs, and flew to the Philippines. He was arrested and then deported from the Philippines in November 2012 because he lacked proper identification, prosecutors said. He was sent to Los Angeles, where he was arrested by federal marshals, and then extradited to New York, where he has been held without bail since December.

"He had enough and wanted to come back and have the opportunity to make it right," Obedin told reporters after the court proceeding on Long Island.

Sand faces up to four years in prison when he is sentenced in May.

"Neither court orders nor the familial bond meant anything to him as he fled to avoid his obligations," U.S. Attorney Loretta Lynch said in a statement.

The two mothers of Sand's three children were not in the courtroom for Thursday's proceeding, but Obedin has said he has contacted them and claimed their priority is for Sand to be free to earn a living so he can repay his debt. As part of the plea agreement, Sand is required to make full restitution. He waived his right to appeal the guilty plea.

Obedin said Sand has worked in the past as a car salesman and has an offer to work in that field when he is released.

UFC 157?s Dan Henderson says Olympic wrestling won?t go out without a big fight

TORRANCE, Calif. -- Before becoming an MMA fighter, Dan Henderson had a successful career as an amateur wrestler. He represented the U.S. in the 1992 and the 1996 Olympics in Greco-Roman wrestling. If the International Olympic Committee gets their way, no more wrestlers will get the chance to experience the Olympics from 2020 on. Last week, the IOC decided to drop wrestling from its core sports.

Henderson was surprised when he heard the news.

"It was pretty sad news. I was shocked, a little bit. At the same time, I knew they had been talking about it for a number of years, that they were going to take some of the wrestling out. I think nobody thought they would actually go ahead and do it because the sport's been around forever in the Olympics."

But he doesn't think the fight is over.

"I think the wrestling community in itself is much bigger and stronger than people give it credit for, and I'm talking worldwide. A lot of countries are banding together and really getting behind it to put a lot of pressure on the IOC."

Protests have already begun. Bulgarian wrestling federation president Valentin Yordanov sent back his gold medal, won at the 1996 Olympics, in protest of the decision. During a major tournament in Iran this weekend, wrestlers will lie down on the mats in a sign of unity.

"I don't think it's a done deal yet," Henderson said. "Wrestling's not going to go out without a big fight."
