Sep 08 2012

The history of web design is an intriguing and complex art that consists of technological developments and the trends of the visitors who use it. There are actually four generations that have each directly contributed in making the websites that we see on the internet today.

The first time frame began with the development of ?Mosaic? which was the first freeware browser to be introduced on the open market. The designing of websites were still limited by the lack of technology though which caused the inability of internet service provider to relay data quickly and very slow modem connections. These original websites usually were designed with black lines used for segments in full page texts and large headline banners. This period ended with the development of HTML.

The second period had a more defined look and featured a structured menu when information and bullets were displayed. It also introduced numerous new characteristics such as buttons with chamfered edges and using icons in place of words. This caused most websites of this period to be over-filled with icons, congested backgrounds and coloured graphics. Most sites were constantly changing to adapt with the development of technology such as screen resolution and 8bit to 24bit monitors.

The excessive use of browser upgrades made web text harder to read and many users did not want to wait for the full content of a website to load. Web designers started focusing on speeding up the downloading of websites.

The third generation websites saw the introduction of multi-media content such as 3D models, sound and animation. It was also in this generation that popular Flash technology was first used. In order to attract users to specific sites by service or merchandise, web designers utilized multi-media content. This enabled users to search and find what they were looking for quickly so site structure and its navigation system was crucial.

The strategy of ?AIDA? was also introduced during this period. ?AIDA? stands for attract new customers and visitors, keep their interest in the website, entice the customer?s desire want more information on the website and then encourage the customer to action on what is featured on the website.

The finally or last time frame has a lot of similarities to the previous period with a few new distinct features. These features include the abundance of multi-media content that is available and the unique selling propositions that can only be featured on the internet. Web designs have become very specific and developed to meet the user?s requirements in fields such as ecommerce, business and entertainment just to name a few.

The history of web designing and development plays a major role in the overall history of the 21st century and will continue to be a major part of history as technology develops. The World Wide Web is still in its growth stage with millions of new websites being added daily and with ever new trend or technological requirement it will continue to expand. Because of this we all have the opportunity to contribute to the development of web designing.
