The Shelter Community Church bought the former Kettering Theater location for $675,000.
The former Kettering Theater space will get new life this spring as a local church prepares to move into the building.
The Shelter Community Church, currently meeting in a building on John Glenn Street in Dayton, bought the old theater for $675,000.
Lead Pastor Ryan Riddell said the church is hoping to complete significant renovations by May, but does not have an estimate for how much the work will cost.
The theater consists of about 10,000-square-feet of space, which gives the church double the space it had before.
Pete Nichols, vice president of brokerage services for CBRE in Dayton, represented the seller, identified as Chakeres Theaters Inc. in county records.
Nichols said the building was vacant for more than five years, but when it was a theater, it was divided into two rooms that seated a total of 900 people.
?A lot of people locally had their first date at the Chakeres Theater,? he said. ?It won?t look like the old Kettering Theater when they get it done.?
Nichols said the church plans to spruce up the exterior and improve the parking lot, in addition to significant changes to the interior, including possibly leveling the sloped floor.
The theater is located at 1441 E. Dorothy Lane in Kettering.
