Roope Tonteri take out the FIS Snowboard World Championships Big Air competition

Finnish rider Roope Tonteri put on yet another tremendous performance, this time walking away with the gold medal the International Skiing Federation (FIS) World Championships Big Air competition that went down in Quebec City, Canada, on Saturday, January 19.

Sweden?s Niklas Mattsson had to settle for second place, thus taking home the silver medal, whereas Belgium?s Seppe Smits clinched the bronze medal and therefore completed the winner?s podium.

A massive crowd was in attendance to witness some of the sport?s top athletes battle it out for the glory in conditions affected by heavy snow and wind. The challenge was indeed there, but the contenders for the coveted victory were more than capable of adjusting to the conditions and coming up with their best.

Through the course of the final, the crowd anticipated a triple to be landed by one of the daring riders. Even though there were plenty of 1080 and double cork in the books, a triple never came. It seemed that the athletes had opted for safer runs, while saving their flashier tricks for a better weather.

Pitted against 12 riders, Tonteri faced a daunting task of coming up with the highest-scoring trick of the day.

The Finnish rider, however, managed to come through after stomping a relative safe but massive Cab 1080 to seal the deal with a score of 188.5.

"I don't know what to say," Tonteri said. "I just tried to land my tricks like in the slopestyle. And this is what I got."

Mattsson, who had been a mere spectator at the snowboarding big air competition for the last couple of months due to injuries, landed a 1080 double cork and a front-side 1080 double cork to finish with a score of 177.75. The score proved sufficient to put him comfortably in second place.

"I'm super stoked to be on the podium," Mattson said. "I haven't done those tricks since I injured my right meniscus last September."

Smits, who is always a treat to watch at any snowboarding competition, landed a clean back-side 1080 double cork and a Cab 1260 to finish in third place with a score of 149.5.
